I HATE people with cellphones!

The 'Brick'Ok, so maybe that’s a bit strong. It’s not that I hate cellphones, I just hate how some people use them.
If you think about it, cellphones are an amazing technology. You used to call a place (Joe’s house) now you can call the person, wherever they may be. That’s pretty cool.

Back when cell phones were new, seeing somebody walk around with the ‘brick’ was cool (see picture); you knew that person was important. Nowadays everyone has a cellphone and it seems as if they still think it’s cool.

Let me clear up some myths for everyone:

  • Your ring tone is not clever and nobody likes to hear it. If you paid for the Ringtone“>crazy frog ringtone, I’m sorry you got ripped off; it’s really not that fun to listen to the 15th time around.
  • Wearing your bluetooth headset in your ear when your not using it does not look cool and nobody is impressed. It’s incredibly distracting to try to talk to somebody who has this cyborg-type device hanging from his head.

And for further information, here’s some cellphone advice. Never, ever, EVER:

  • …leave your cell phone at your desk and walk away. It is unbearable to try and work when somebodies cellphone phone goes off every 2 minutes. To make matters worse, you have your ringer set on the loudest setting to the Mission Impossible or other ‘cute‘ ring tone (see 1st myth above).
  • …talk on the cellphone when you’re waiting in line somewhere. (1) Nobody in line wants to hear your conversation and (2) when you get the the counter you have to put someone on hold, and it’s usually the poor person working at the register. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen somebody at Starbucks have the person at the register wait until they finish their phone call before ordering; it’s SICK! You’re really not that important.

And that’s all I have to say about that.

I wonder if/when the silly bluetooth things will be commonplace.

    Hear-bloody-hear!
    Agree with you completely.
I only ever wanted a mobile ‘Phone, NOT a mobile
    TV Station or miniature Boom-Box.
Technology’s great, but they must be desperate to
    outsell each other.

Hey, this bluetooth thingie is no different than a person wearing an over-the-ear hearing-aid.

Distracting, yes… But people get use to it if you stay around them long enough.

Funny how many people concur with these sentiments - the thing that really p1$$e$ me off when dopes leave their mobile behind on a desk is the voicemail ringback. Why, oh, why isn’t the default to text a notification.

the funny thing about people and cellphones is when the phone rings the person starts to walk and talk. watch someone, as soon as the phone rings they start walking around, next they start kicking stones as they talk. ive watched hundreds of people do this and everyone is the same! my question is this. why?

Right-on about the cell phone rant!

Uhh, they are quite different. An over-the-ear hearing-aid helps a person hear and is neccessary for “normal” living. They look very different from a headset. A bluetooth headset helps a person look like a dork. If you wear one all the time and think you look cool, think again my man. Think again.

The reason many people wear their headset (bluetooth, wired or otherwise) is because plugging in the headset when the phone rings simply takes too long (so they miss the call). People who don’t wear their headset usually put the phone directly against their skull and hope not to fry their brain.

Another reason to wear a headset is if the cellphone doubles as an iPod competitor.

And then the really big bonus: When the headset is plugged in, the phone doesn’t ring anywhere but the persons own ear!

I don’t use cell phones and I object to other people showing me that they have cell phones, especially in inappropriate places.

So in essentially I agree with you.

I cannot say I agree with your comments about the Bluetooth headsets, because although they don’t look very cool (IMHO), they are unobtrusive, except when the owner starts shouting for no apparent reason ….

I agree 100% - people are idiots. It’s usually the 21 yr old kids that have to pull out their phone every 2 minutes to make sure that they have not missed a text message. Believe me - no one that important is trying to call you !!! I also hate that “big shots” that have to pull out their cell phone the minute the plane leaves. Don’t worry you pompous aholes - the company can get along fine without you.

And to add to the distraction, does the earpiece really need to blink !?

so…the fact that i’ve lost my cellphone and am in digital withdrawal is a good thing?

    @Glenda the Goodwitch

Yes. It’s a very good thing — well maybe not. I was a overworked and disgruntled when I wrote this originally.

So you lost your cool cellphone with the full keyboard? That sucks.

Jeremy, I actually agree with your rant (even if I’m guilty)… my ringtone is loud and annoying..”devying gravity” from wicked.

And I think bluetooth headsets do look stupid…especially that damn blinking blue light. So occassionally…I look silly when I wear mine.

Reason I “lost” my phone…was I was having too much fun twittering and dodgeballing at the Closing Party. Lucky for me…it had just fallen under the couch we were sitting on. It was patiently waiting for me to return (on my hands and knees with a flashlight) to discover it. Whew!

i hate it when those damn phones with cam,mp3,bluetooth,etc.. rings in the office. When my obsolete phone (3310) was stolen, I bought a new one with cam, mp3,bluetooth,etc. and i put it in silent mode and just in front of me in my computer at office. I should try those bluetooth earpiece. Do they cost a lot? Do they harm our brains?

So I just bought my first bluetooth headset. And yes I did admittingly get annoyed seeing people look nuts as if there talking to themselves. Luckily my hair covers my one robot ear. But man is it ever more convienent then searching through my purse. Men if you’ve ever tried to get an important call when your cell phone is lost in your giant crap filled purse you’d understand the wonders of having one attached to your ear. And Ive worked at tills many times, and I HATE people who come up get a call and even though I have a obviously huge lineup of customers waiting they continue on there call. And just stand there expecting me and everyone else to wait, even better when they raise there hand to me as if to put me on hold or to hush me in case I say something. Those people really pi$$ me off. How rude. I dont care if your making a million dollar deal, then leave the lineup, because its commen courtesy…

In general I agree with everything you say. There is a huge lack of etiquette when it comes to Cell Phones, and many people seem to become self-centered sociopaths when they have one in their possession.

In response to CELLPHONES: “Do they harm our brains?” The Bluetooths rediate much less power than the Cellphones themselves, so a Bluetooth next to your ear is no worse, if not better for you, than talking directly into the phone. A Wired Ear Bud of course is about Null for radiation other than the EMF generated by the ‘tiny little speaker’.

In defense of SOME of those checking their messages constantly, I’m on call 24/7 supporting hundreds of servers and even more Users. My servers page me when there are problems. I also run my Blackberry in Silent Mode (I try to be a good Cell-Citizen), so constantly checking is the only way I can perform the required due diligence for my job. I may not be that important, but my Servers and Customers are. :)
